When you make an actual garment you will have to know how to decrease and increase stitches.  For this article we'll deal with just the increase.

  • Increasing is adding a stitch (or stitches) to your work. There will be many instances when you will need to know how to increase. There are 2 common ways to do this. One way is called KFB. The other is called M1. Both ways will be explained in this article.
  • M1 means MAKE 1 STITCH.
  • Put the right knitting needle into the yarn at the bottom, or under, of the stitch on the left needle.
  • Pull the yarn up and onto the left needle.
  • Knit that yarn off the needle and you have added, OR MADE a new stitch.
  • KFB means KNIT IN THE FRONT AND BACK OF THE SAME STITCH.
  • Knit one stitch in the regular way but don't slip the stitch off of the left needle.
  • Knit another stitch through the back of the same stitch while it is still on the left needle.
  • Slip the stitch off the left needle onto the right needle. You have now added one stitch.
