How to Knit the Stockinette Stitch

Some people think that knitting is difficult, but it really isn't. All knitting is actually based on only  two simple stitches, the knit stitch and the purl stitch. The Stockinette Stitch is the most common of all the Knitting Stitches. It's very simple.  

Once you know how to knit both the Knit Stitch and the Purl Stitch you will be able to do the Stockinette Stitch.  If you are following a pattern, it will probably, at some point, say "continue knitting in Stockinette Stitch" or just "continue knitting". Stockinette stitch means to Knit one row, Purl back. Practice both the Knit and Purl stitches before you start on your project.  

Remember, practice makes perfect!  

Once you have perfected this simple stitch you will be ready to tackle more difficult stitches, but remember, they are all based on knitting and purling.

• Knit all the stitches across the row.
• Turn the work around.
• Bring the yarn to the front of the work.
• Purl all the stitches across the row.
• Put the yarn in the back of the work.
• Knit all the stitches across the row.
• Continue doing these two rows.

This is the Stockinette Stitch.
