How to Knit a Stockinette Stitch Wash Rag (Dish Cloth)

They can be called wash rags, wash cloths or dish cloths. There are lots of different patterns for them. Here's an easy washcloth that incorporates the Stockinette Stitch with Seed Stitch edging.

I used Softball Cotton and #8 needle. My finished size is approximately 8 inches by 8 inches.

Gauge isn't real important, but you do want a tight knit for your washcloth.

Here are the instructions:

• Cast on 30 stitches, or however many you need to get the size.

• Work the first four rows in seed stitch (K1, P1 across row one, P1, K1 across row two, then repeat).
• Put stitch markers after your first 4 stitches and before the last 4 stitches to remind yourself to do seed stitch.

TIP: You can make stitch markers by tying a different colored yarn around the needle.

• Work the remainder of your project with the seed stitch on the first four and last four rows and stockinette stitch in the middle, until your project measures about 7 inches.
• Work four more rows in seed stitch, starting on a wrong-side (purl side) row.
• Bind off.
• Cut off excess yarn, leaving a few inches for weaving in ends. 
• Use a crochet hook or a tapestry needle to weave in the ends.
